    One of the oldest political subdivisions in Virginia, Henrico was the scene of the second settlement in the colony and was established in as one of the eight original shires or counties. The county was named for Henry, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of King James I of England. Our History: History . Henrico Parish Church was built between and near the James River on Varina Farm. It was the successor to Henricus Church. After the construction of Saint John's Church in Richmond, the church fell into disuse and it was eventually abandoned. It was also known as "Varina Parish Church".
